Yesterday the quail started singing. The male flies up to a high place and sings to attract a mate.

and here's one on the highest branch of a dead tree. A starling decided to scoot up close then ignore the singing quail.
I don't know if you can see in the picture, but there are gnats aplenty around the quail. He doesn't seem bothered by them.
